Sexual health concern is possibly the most intimate and life-changing issue that affects cancer patients, especially those of a young age. Because this facet of coping is so complicated there are a few things you need to think about that may ease your mind and make the problem feel less immense.

  • All the wonderful things that made you attractive to others are still there. You may be preoccupied with health concerns but you are still you; GIST cannot change that.
  • You cannot “give” cancer to a partner. Of course, you know this, but irrational fear is part of the cancer package. Remind yourself of this and then move on.
  • Fatigue & nausea may be inhibiting factors in your desire to be intimate and/or your performance. If this is the cause, identify it and then speak with your partner. You can find ways to manage it together.  Simple solutions like engaging in sexual activity at a time of day when you are least tired may be the answers you are looking for.

Body image changes can also affect your sexuality. If you are feeling unattractive or are experiencing feelings of worthlessness, talk to your partner. You may not be able to do this at first; it might feel too awkward or too difficult. If this is the case, try talking to someone else, a friend or medical professional. Sometimes it is easier to talk to a stranger about issues that you find “embarrassing”, a support group could be what you are looking for. The LRG runs a secure email community of hundreds of GIST patients and caregivers, many of whom have been in your situation. There are also numerous local chapters all over the globe who find it helpful to meet face-to-face. Try one of these avenues first; when you feel you are ready to speak clearly about your concerns or fears, you should speak to your partner. You have to be ready and willing to open yourself up honestly to this person.
