Daniel Scherban

Daniel Scherban (July 4, 1952-December 23, 2007)Mr. Daniel John Scherban, age 55 years, passed away on Sunday December 23, 2007 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Daniel was born in Port Arthur, Ontario on July 4, 1952 to Dorothy and Victor Scherban. He married Kathleen Hill on September 4, 1976. Dan attended Queen Elizabeth School, PACI and was a graduate of Lakehead University with degrees in economics and education. Dan was employed by the City of Thunder Bay while attending university. He graduated as a teacher, and worked briefly for the Lakehead Board of Education. Dan also worked with several social service agencies before beginning his career as a probation and parole officer and later becoming an area manager with the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Daniel will be sadly missed and is survived by his wife Kathleen, son Christopher, daughter Victoria (Ben), Gabrielle, his mother Dorothy, his brother Michael (Gayle), and nephews Joel and Matthew, and many relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father Victor, his mother in-law Inez Hill, and his grandparents. Dan enjoyed cooking for and entertaining family and friends at home and at his parent’s camp on Lake Superior. He was an accomplished cook, who created delicious meals for family and friends. Dan was also creative in numerous major and minor home renovations he undertook over the years and nothing was too big to tackle. Dan and Kathleen created many gardens at their home and when one project was complete, Dan quickly moved on to the next. Dan took pride in his work and thoroughly enjoyed and treasured the many friendships that developed over the years. Dan was especially proud of his children and cherished their time together. Dan enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest even after his diagnosis of this rare form of cancer.

Cremation has taken place in Toronto and a celebration of Daniel’s life took place on Friday January 4, 2008 at the Italian Cultural Centre. The family would like, in lieu of flowers, donations to go to The Life Raft Group, an international non-profit organization supporting persons with Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST). Dan received information, support and attended two Life Raft conferences over the years. The Life Raft Group can be contacted at 1-973-837-9092 or emailed at www.liferaftgroup.org.
